Body Image in Today's World
How the Media Affects Us
It is no secret that “skinny” is “in”. But do we ever look at what the media is telling us? The media plays a huge role on today’s world from what’s hot and what’s not. It has gotten so out of hand that it is very common that people are taken to rehab for eating disorders. For example: Lindsay Lohan, Tori Spelling, Nicole Richie and many more, have all been in the tabloids for been extremely skinny. But what some people don’t understand is the affect that it has on young teens. From the tender age 15 most girls have pressures from high school and the media telling them what’s right and how they should live their lives. It is very common to find weight loss tips, workouts, and dating advice in magazines. They are pushing us into being the cookie cutter type almost subconsciously.
What we can do
It all comes down to having self-esteem, self-esteem in today’s world seems almost impossible. Trying to do what you think is right, instead of what everyone else is doing. The quote “if your friends’ jump of a cliff, will you?” might be old school, but is still very true and has a good point. Everyone knows that it is hard to focus on the positives instead of the negatives when it comes to you. But there are something’s that’s you can do about it, you have to remember that you’re never alone there are millions of people dealing with these struggles every day, and it is ok to seek help. I know that seeking help might embarrassing and you feel like a failure, but when in all reality it is a tremendous weight lifted.Just remember that everyone is beautiful and has something special to bring to the table.
